Disgaea : Hour of DarknessReviewed by Marcio Guastavino
When Disgaea: Hour of Darkness first came out, no one knew what to expect from it. Some people didn't even know it existed. Well, to those that picked up a copy, I say congratulations; you've just picked up one of the best Strategy RPGs of all time. The story starts off with Laharl, the prince of the netherworld, being rudely awakened from his two-year slumber. It seems his father has died and now he must protect his rightful place as ruler of the netherworld. With demons taking advantage of his father's death, this will not be an easy task. To make matters worse and Laharl's trouble even greater, angels have taken place in the battle. With the help of his vassal Etna and the clumsy angel Flonne, Laharl will battle countless demons and take place in a story filled with conspiracy, love, and comedy galore. I'm going to start with what people are going to have the most problem with, the graphics. Disgaea is a 2D strategy RPG, meaning that if you are looking for the latest in graphics this is not the game for you. As far as gameplay goes, this game will have you losing sleep that you never thought you needed. There are literally hundreds of things to do in this game. The story itself is great and if you just go through it, the game takes about 20 hours or so. Once you get to the secret dungeons, you will begin focusing more on leveling up your characters. The highest level in this game is 9999, so there is no question about replay value. The game also has a transmigration feature that allows you to start a character back to level one with enhanced stats. To help you level up, the game offers multiple ways to play. One of my favorites is the item world, which is where you fight inside the item you have equipped in order to increase its level (that's right, even the weapons have levels in this game!) and gain more levels for your characters. All of the item world's dungeons are randomly generated, so you'll never get the same dungeon twice. Disgaea also has one of the best and largest class systems of all time. Over a 100 characters to create and spells and special moves that will leave you mind-boggled. With its flawless innovation and masterfully executed gameplay, this game will keep you busted for a long time. More Screenshots:

Disgaea has so much to do that there's absolutely no way I can list everything down. The best way to find out is to pick up a copy and experience it yourself. There is enough replay value here to keep you occupied. Recently it was re-released in stores but has gone back to being hard to find. Whatever the price, it's worth every penny. I give Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the PS2 a HIGH Evolution Factor. It's all about the Prinnies dood.
