Playing dot hack is like eating your mom's meatloaf for the first time. You don't like it, but eventfully you can't live without it. This is the first volume in a four part series of games. The story takes place in the year 2010 when a young boy named Kite gets a copy of a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) called “The World”.

Kite is very eager to set up his user profile and join his friends online. One friend, Orca, promises Kite that he will show him the ins and outs of online gaming. Kite and his new friend Orca encounter a never-seen-before monster in the beginner's dungeons. This monster attacks Orca with such ferocity that he is deleted from the area. The funny thing about this battle is that Orca's real life persona is in a coma. Now Kite must help his friend in both the real world and the cyber realm.

The main focus of this RPG (role playing game) is to simulate that you are playing online. The battle system is ok, but could use a little more work. I found that trading items with fellow players in the game was easy and fair. You can also use a data drain to lower each monster's level and get rare items and virus cores for gate hacking. On the bad side, using this too much can cause a viral infection. The camera control can be very frustrating at times, and chasing enemies is a mission in itself.

The replay value for this game is high as it is the first of four parts in a series. You can probably get the whole series for about eighty bucks. A nice feature is that you can transfer your saved data from .hack part one to .hack part two, and so on. In addition, there is an Anime called Liminalty included with .hack: Infection that helps you understand what's going on. Since the story is so interesting, fans should be playing this well into the future.
