Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1Reviewed by Victor Araujo
Capcom serves up a solid compilation of games in Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1. The collection packs 22 of Capcom's earliest titles which include: their very first game, Vulgus, the original Street Fighter II along with Champion Edition, and Hyper Fighting, 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai, Ghost' N Goblins, Ghouls‘ N Ghosts, Super Ghouls' N Ghosts, Son Son, Exed Exes, Pirate Ship Higemaru, Commando, Mercs, Gun.Smoke, Section Z, Bionic Commando, Forgotten Worlds, Legendary Wings, Trojan, and Final Fight. Nearly every game present is arcade perfect, with the only exceptions being Forgotten Worlds and the Street Fighter games. The arcade Forgotten Worlds sported a dial, which would rotate your character, while the right analog stick or buttons assigned to rotate left or right are used on the collection's version. While the game still plays well, the analog stick feels too jerky and the rotation speed for the buttons can't be adjusted. The versions of the Street Fighter games come with a few changes. Versus and Training modes have been added along with Deluxe mode, allowing you to pit different versions of the characters against each other. Unfortunately, the Street Fighter games have loading screens between matches. The Collection also packs a great deal of bonuses and extras that fans of these classics will enjoy. Histories for the games are interesting to read, while art galleries, music, and tips give an added challenge as the majority of the content is unlocked by beating a high score or finishing a game. Some of these challenges can be difficult, and few require you to beat the game before the tips are unlocked, which by that time they're no longer as valid. Most games offer various options for adjusting the difficulty, the amount of lives you start with, or limiting the amount of continues. Various video options allow the resizing of the game screen, or moving the HUD off to the side for the vertical shooters. In game music and sound effects, volumes can also be adjusted independently of each other. Some of the games even offer a remixed soundtrack. There's a nice range of options so you can adjust the games to what suits you best. Screenshots:

At first I was left wondering why lesser games were on this collection instead of more memorable ones. But this is Vol. 1 so it serves as a great retrospect of the early years of Capcom. With that, the only game that is truly missing from this collection is the original Street Fighter. This collection, however, does offer a good selection and variety of games. Casual gamers may not find much here to please them, but hardcore fans of classic gaming will love what they find. It's a great collection, and I can't wait for volume two. Since Vol.1 shows Capcom's beginnings, I'm hoping Vol. 2 packs the games that dominated arcades during the later 80s and early 90s.
