Spike TV’s 3rd Annual Scream Awards
Taping October 18th 2008
Broadcast on October 21st 2008, on Spike TV, at 9 pm

by Alicia Glass

Hosted at the enormous Greek Theater in Griffin Park in Los Angeles, the taping of the Spike Scream Awards 2008 commenced with first a run (or was it a 3 hour standing room only torture session?) down the red carpet and then on to the live performances and the taping!

I have also included my personal Real Unedited Experience of the Spike Scream Awards. Be warned, it isn’t very pretty or pleasant, but it is honest.

It looked like the taped version of the Scream Awards when shown on Spike TV was going to be hosted by Greg Grunberg, most famous at the moment for his portrayal of tough cop Matt Parkman on the wildly popular show Heroes! Greg Grunberg

On the red carpet, I got to see all sorts of celebrities and their poor publicists and handlers. First to actually walk the red carpet was Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame. He didn’t say much that I heard, but he did seem confident about the nights performance of “Glow”, the Pumpkins latest single.

Writer and Producer for Hellboy, Mike Mignola  was happy to expound on his recent huge success at Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. He was quoted as saying that he wasn’t sure when Hellboy 3 would be in the works, but that he and Guillermo Del Toro were certainly discussing it.

Ron Perlman is famous for his dry wit and wide shark smile at the last moment, and the Spike Scream Awards is no exception. When asked what his dream acting role would be, he promptly replied that it was Hellboy!

James Remar, famous for his role as psychopathic vigilante Dexter’s father, was on hand to answer what I considered to be far too many questions about a show that he’s been reduced to dream sequences on. However, Remar is a very kind and warm individual, answering all the Press questions in a calm and considered manner. He spoke highly of the show and the character Dexter, and when asked what his inspiration for the next-to-impossible role of an adoptive father trying to corral a murderous son was, he spoke of our fine military and how fathers have to send their sons off to war all the time and that how made for all the inspiration he needed.

No show of such gothiness and gore and fan squee-dom would be complete without the master of shock-rockery, Marilyn Manson! Actually, aside from the apparent lack of desire to smile at a single thing, Manson was quite civil to everyone. He spoke of his latest project, a nasty new piece called Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll and potentially a new music album as well!

And on we go with the actual show!

First up in the theatre, Kate Beckinsale sashayed out on stage to present the Scream Legend Award to an apparently highly bemused Sir Anthony Hopkins!

Kevin Smith and Seth Rogan, in their both grossly overrated pornographic humor fashion, presented the Best Fantasy Movie award to Hellboy 2: The Golden Army!

In an interesting twist of young versus *ahem* experienced, Kristen Bell and Stan Lee presented the Best Comic Book Award to writers Brian K. Vaughan and Artist Pia Guerra for Y: The Last Man.

Cam Gigandet waltzed out on stage and previewed an exclusive trailer for the highly anticipated movie Twilight!

Gary Oldman, whom I still have such a thing for, graced the stage to give out the posthumous awards for Best Villian & Best Fantasy Actor to Heath Ledger, along with a great mini montage to the fine actor from his last movie The Dark Knight.

No award for Best TV Show would be better presented than by the most dysfunctional tv family I know of, the Osbournes, who laughingly gave the award to, don’t be surprised, Dexter!

Everyone’s favorite Hellbilly Rob Zombie, winner of the Best Remake award for his work on Halloween, worked the crowd into a frenzy for his presentation of the award for Best Sci-fi Female to the ever popular and lovely Milla Jovovich! She’s so cute when she curses like a sailor right into the microphone and then apologizes profusely for it!

Summer Glau and Thomas Dekker of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, were both on hand to intro a performance by the Estonian singer Kerli called “Walking On Air”.

Sean William Scott of American Pie fame was next on hand to present the award for Best Supporting Performance, and noone was surprised when the award went to Gary Oldman for The Dark Knight!

Next Winona Ryder came out to present the Scream Immortal Award to a nervous Tim Burton, who arrived in a black cable car supported by black and white balloons!

The legendary Frank Miller, flanked by two pieces of lovely arm candy, was next to present the award for Best Sci-Fi Movie to, and noone was surprised by this, Iron Man! Robert Downey Jr. had sent in a video tape acceptance speech, as he’s in London working on his new movie Sherlock Holmes.

After that was a sneak peek trailer at the new remake of Friday the 13th!

Neve Campbell of the Scream Trilogy fame was next on hand to present the Mastermind Award to everyone’s favorite director Wes Craven!

Famous for his attention-getting tactics and frank responses, Marilyn Manson fought with an impertinent microphone for two takes, to present the Spike Awards famous category Most Memorable Mutilation. The movie that won, Teeth, is an independent film about the vagina dentata myth, and the scene they won the award with made about everyone in the hall flinch.

Next was the award for Best Director and of course, not a single person in the hall was surprised or disappointed when the award went to Christopher Nolan for his epic work on The Dark Knight! Chris’ brother John was also on hand for the award of Best Screenplay.

Everyone’s favorite wisecracking charmer Ron Perlman was next to present the award for the Best Horror Actress, which went to Liv Tyler for her work on the movie The Strangers.

Darren Lynn Bousman of the Saw movie series fame, and Anna Lynne McCord of Nip/Tuck and the new 90210 series introduced the fantastic performance by Smashing Pumpkins for their latest smash hit “Glow”!

Next Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance, happily stationed in front of the life-size prop ship from the movie, presented the trailer for the Most Anticipated Movie, not a single person was shocked to see it was Watchmen!

A broadly smiling and joke-cracking Rosario Dawson presented the Ultimate Scream Award to, no surprises here either, The Dark Night!

And last but certainly not least, Samuel L. Jackson bounded onto the stage to introduce the 2008 Comicon Icon Award for George Lucas first award show appearance in a long time. The Icon-winning legend was ushered to the stage amid thousands of green glowsticks waving like lightsabers, flanked by dozens of Stormtroopers and Clonetroopers, and heralded by the famous Star Wars March theme!
