8th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival by Alicia Glass San Diego’s Premiere festival for all things Asian and Film returns! Once again hosted at the Mission Valley Ultrastar movie theatres, the San Diego Asian Film Festival returns to rock your world with new movies, astounding cartoons, live entertainment, sponsors galore, workshops and much more. It would be very hard for me to see all the 100+ films offered at the Festival, so here’s a small list of the ones I did manage to see. Several of the films or collections of shorts I saw experienced technical malfunctions, so they are not reviewed. I had hoped that the Ultrastar movie theatre had gotten over their issues from last year, but it seems there are still occasional malfunctions. Opening night of the Festival featured “Finishing the Game”, an amusing farce about the trials of finding Bruce Lee’s stand-in for the fabled movie “The Game of Death”, and the opening night party with the cast at the Airport Lounge. The event was sponsored by AZN Television and featured stars from the movie such as MC Hammer and Dustin Nguyen cavorting with the rest of us peons! Saturday saw the annual Gala Awards Dinner, presented at the lovely Doubletree Hotel and hosted by Jinah Kim and Dennis Tashima. And the list of award-winning films, some of which I actually got to see! Music Video Plus, of course, the Lifetime Achievement Award to the fabulous entrepreneur and actor George Takei! |
