Artist Meghan McMahon makin' friends in the alley.

2006 COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL ARTIST ALLEY EXCLUSIVE:
Artist Meghan McMahon shows for the first time in the Alley!

Meghan McMahon is very much the living embodiment of her artwork. Like her art, Meghan’s personality can be whimsically cute one minute and then inspiringly introspective the next. This is the first year Meghan is in the alley and I wanted her to tell us about how it feels to do her first convention as a professional.

The Testmarket Evolution (TME): How does it feel to be here in the Artist Alley for the first time as a professional?

Meghan McMahon (MM): I am so excited and super happy! Just super happy and so many people looking at things and going, “Wow!”

TME: How many years have you come to the San Diego Comic-Con as a fan?

MM: I’ve been coming to the Comic-Con for about…five or six years now as a fan and this is my first time actually showing and its been such a rush to be able to come in early, before everything (starts) and set up and see all the people come together and have everyone, you know, just smile when they look at my art. It’s great!

TME: What got you into painting?

MM: I was really, really cheap for Christmas one year and decided I was going to paint everyone pictures instead of getting them real gifts. So I did that and they went over so well I just continued painting and here I am now.

TME: How old where you when this Christmas happened?

MM: That was in 2004. Two years ago (laughs)!

TME: Who were the artists that inspired or influenced your work?

MM: I really, really like the work of Johnny Vasquez and Tim Burton. Most of my comedic influences come from being raised on Monty Python all the Mel Brooks movies. I don’t know were everything comes from specifically, but where ever it is I like it.

TME: How about any Japanese cultural influences?

MM: EEEEEEE! They just make me happy and make me run around in a giddy way with my arms raised and these big ol’ google eyes.

TME: Are their any conscious or reoccurring themes you express in your artwork?

MM: I really like the idea of life and death. I really like the idea of your mind being a prison and art being a form of release from that prison and that is expressed a lot through my artwork and sketches.
