30 Days of Night : Eben and Stella #1Reviewed by Von Jared Omo
After the gruesome event that took place in Barrow, Alaska where darkness stood upon the citizens for a month and were descended upon by a band of vampires, Stella Olemaun, the only survivor of the incident, wrote a book about the tragedy determined to bring out the presence of these bloodsuckers and reveal to the world that they exist . However, Stella’s determination is later questioned when the queen confronts her with a choice – in exchange for the evidence that they exist, the queen will bring Stella’s dead husband Eben back to life. Stella chooses to be reunited with her lover only to find out that he’s come back hungry for blood. Stella gets bitten by Eben and a struggle ensues. Stella and Eben finally stop and Stella walks away from Eben and leaves the room. As she walks through the rainy night, she bumps into a man getting out of a car. He complains about how “sticky” she is and that she better not leave a print on the car. Stella looks in the car and sees he left the keys in the ignition. The man later enters the store he parked in front of only to find that vampires have eaten everyone inside except a policeman and a woman, who are tied up. The man is really a vampire and is irritated that his three friends took too long inside the store. Two cops later come into the store only to be eaten by the vampires. The four vampires exit the store and find the car is missing along with a baby in the backseat. In another part of the city, two vampire hunters discover the existence of the “next wave” of vampires and learn that Stella has come into contact with them by reading the book she wrote. They decide to use her as bait. In another part of the city, a woman by the name of Xen is flirting with a man in what looks like a diner. Her cell phone rings and it turns out to be the man who left the keys in the ignition of the car. He tells her he lost the baby and she tells him to find it. Stella, who stole the car, discovers the baby in the back seat and says that everything is going as planned. The story is easy to follow seeing that the summary of past events is written in the first page to let the reader know what is going on so far, which is a very good thing. The art is meant to be dark and somewhat freakish and gives the comic a gothic feel. Some of the images resemble life-like pictures which are brilliant in a way, while some of the images look like rough sketches which I think could have been done a little better, but it fits the comic’s vibe. The story is in its early stages, but I believe it will get better throughout the series seeing that Steve Niles is a nominated Best Writer for his work on 30 Days of Night: Return to Barrow. The comic contains some adult dialogue which may be unsuitable to minors.
