Beet the Vandel Buster is about a young boy who dreams of becoming a Vandel buster on the Zenon Squad (a group of individuals who hunt devils, monsters, Vandels, and other such foes in the age of darkness). They are famous for being the strongest Vandel busters on the continent. Beet studied and trained very hard to become a Vandel. Unfortunately, one afternoon, Beet’s negligence caused the Zenon squad’s defeat by Beltose, the devil. The five injured and dying Vandels convened and a unanimous decision was made. It was decided they would sacrifice their life force powers into their weapons, and pass them on to Beet. Years pass and Beet grows up. Follow his adventures as he carries out the Zenon Squad’s quest to put an end to a dark century.
I was not impressed by the storyline. It reminded me too much of other animes like Dragonball Z and Inuyasha, so I felt it was too predictable and boring. I was also disappointed that a lot of the animation was still frame; it felt like a money saving scheme because the art was pretty atrocious. The packaging lacked any sort of information about Beet the Vandel, making it highly difficult to find any information about the show. However, this is ILLUMITOON’s first anime release, which would explain a lot.
Despite my personal feelings of disappointment and aversions to watch it in the first place, I bet this 52 episode series would be thoroughly enjoyable to its intended younger audience. The series encompasses adventure and fantasy, and gives unlikely heroes an opportunity to shine in the limelight while traveling through fantasy lands to right the wronged and fight mythical creatures. Kids and young adults will find the show humorous, flashy, and rousing, even if I didn’t.
