Renton Thurston, a 14-year-old boy, lives in the town of Belforest with his grandfather Axel Thurston. His father, Adrock Thurston, is widely known as a researcher who died saving the world. According to Renton, the town he lives in “just sucks.” The only thing that seems to keep him entertained is his passion for lifting, a sport that resembles surfing but air is used instead of water. However, all that changes when a giant mecha named Nirvash comes crashing down on his room. He discovers the pilot of the Nirvash to be Eureka, one of the most beautiful girls he’s ever seen. When Renton’s grandfather gives Renton a mission to deliver a special drive to the Nirvash, it is discovered that the special part awakens a unique power within the Nirvash. Soon after, Renton is invited to join the Gekkostate, a group that Eureka is part of and is led by his lifting idol, Holland Novak. However, Renton soon realizes that life on the Gekkostate ship is not as fun or entertaining as he thought it would be as portrayed in their magazine “ray=out.” The only thing that seems to keep him on the ship is the presence of Eureka, the girl he seems to have fallen for. However, Renton soon discovers that life on the ship is harder than he thought and there may be something else to Eureka than meets the eye.

This mecha anime has a fair amount of humor, drama, romance, and action, which makes it a very enjoyable to watch. As the series goes on, it begins to have somewhat of an Evangelion feel to it due to some of the moments in the anime. Those who are familiar with Evangelion may start to feel that Renton somewhat comes close to Shinji and Eureka somewhat comes close to Rei. The anime has a good story and plot, the action sequences are amazing, and the animation is brilliant. Fans of mecha anime should definitely check out Eureka Seven if they have not already. Even though the series is done, some people may not know about the anime which means that its fan base may grow over time. The whole Eureka Seven series was shown in its entirety on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and is now finished. For those who missed it, the DVD may be available at local anime shops.

As I said before, even though the series is over, not that many people are familiar with the series, which means that the number of fans may increase. The series won awards in Japan, such as Best Television Series and Best Screenplay, and even received some acclaim from magazines, such as Anime Insider which voted Eureka Seven as “Best DVD Series of the Year” in 2006. If these awards are not enough for you to be intrigued, check out Eureka Seven for yourself and be amazed at what this mecha anime has to offer! You won’t be disappointed!
